Background Marrickville Golf Course is a 20 hectare area of land, which is predominantly owned by Council. The land is leased to the Golf Club under the proviso that it provides public access to the open spaces. The club has depended on irrigation water form Dibble Avenue Waterhole since the 1940s and continues to do so under existing rights. Dibble Avenue Waterhole is a locally listed Heritage Item and Priority Biodiversity Site as it provides refuge for aquatic plants and animals. Following the collapse of the banks at the north-east side of the waterhole in February 2017, Council made emergency repairs and is working on a separate remediation plan to make the banks safe and stable. The development of the plans provides opportunities to introduce best practice sustainable land and environmental management for both sites. The process will look at ways to improve safe public access to the golf course and increase everyone's enjoyment of the spaces. It will also investigate alternative water sources for the golf course and acceptable limits on water extraction into the future. For more details contact Inner West Council.

Walking is by far the most popular recreational activity for residents according to the results of a recent survey conducted by Inner West Council. Walking was voted number one, followed by walking for transport at number two and walking the dog at number five. See the top ten results below. These results indicate that Council needs to prioritise walking, walking for transport and walking the dog as priority recreational activities in our local area. This recreational needs community survey was conducted to inform the Recreation Needs Study - A Healthier Inner West. The report outlines the findings from Council-run community engagement completed to inform the Recreation Needs Study. The Study provides evidence to inform the development of Council policy and strategy in relation to the recreation needs of Inner West residents. Inner West Council have advised that the consultation regarding the new Plan of Management for Marrickville Golf Course Lands & Dibble Avenue Waterhole will commence in June. Originally public consultation was due to commence in late 2017, but for various reasons it has been delayed. Council will hold community consultations in the car park at Marrickville Golf Club and an online survey on the Inner West Council website. Residents will be invited to have their say on how the public space, currently leased to Marrickville Golf Course, is used and managed into the future. Residents can also provide feedback about Dibble Waterhole. A Draft Plan of Management will be prepared once the initial consultation is complete. This draft will then go out to the community for another round of feedback later in the year. After the engagement process on the draft is complete, the Plan of Management will be finalised, ratified by Council, then implemented (we hope!)
Aaron Callaghan, Council's Parks, Planning & Engagement Manager, stated that a 'wide catchment of residents' will be notified about the engagement and that posters will be placed in local parks 'advising of the engagement process'. If you have an interest in the Cooks River, public access to open space and the environment more broadly then do get involved. Attend the public consultations and complete the online survey. Let your voice be heard! Today Inner West Council advised they won't attend the Dibble Waterhole community meeting this Saturday 5 May. Good news - the meeting will go ahead regardless! Come along, provide feedback and it will be passed to Council. Hope to see you on Saturday at A.B. Croft Playground, Dibble Avenue, 10.30am - 12pm!
Celebrate Earth Hour tonight, Sat 24 March, at Steel Park on the Cooks River in Marrickville, 6pm - 8.30pm. Join the clean up of the Cooks River on Sunday 4 March!
On Sunday 4 March at 3pm, local environmental group, the Mudcrabs will clean up the Cooks River mangrove forest next to Marrickville golf course, where rubbish is left behind when the tide goes out. These mangroves are next to the Wave Rock bush regeneration site, which is turning into a lovely bushy oasis. You can join this clean up! By joining you'll be doing two great things: 1. Stop plastic from reaching the ocean - Plastic that drifts down the Cooks River eventually reaches the ocean, where it can harm animals for decades. 2. Protect a special habitat for wildlife - Many fishes and birds have evolved to spend at least part of their lives in mangroves. Mangroves provide shelter and a rich source of food (crabs, worms, insects etc). Bring
